Nintendo president Satoru Iwata will not attend next week's E3 in Los Angeles on the advice of his physician, a company representative told GameSpot. There's no reason to be alarmed, however, as the company says it's "business as usual" for Iwata.
"You won't be seeing Mr. Iwata at E3 next week. He's been instructed by his physician not to travel overseas in the immediate future, and so he will not be making the trip to Los Angeles," the representative said. "Please understand that it is business as usual for Mr. Iwata, and he continues his normal duties as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. while he remains in Japan. As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo's activities at the show."

After breaking launch day sales records for Ubisoft, the publisher announced today that its open-world action game Watch Dogs sold through more than 4 million units during its first week. Sales at that level make Watch Dogs the "best-selling new IP at launch across the video game industry." Not only that, but Ubisoft says Watch Dogs is now its best-selling game of all time in terms of first-week sales.
"With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has positioned itself as the must-have game of the moment," Ubisoft marketing executive Tony Key said. "We're really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future."
Life lessons that video games taught us is a parody series that tries to examine exactly what they are teaching us about the world around us.
Today's episode takes a look at what Half-Life 2 tells us about surviving an alien invasion.
Ubisoft's open-world action game Watch Dogs is the fastest selling game the French publisher, which also is behind the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, has ever released. The company announced today that the game sold-through more copies in its first 24 hours of availability than any previous title in the history of Ubisoft.
Bethesda's recently released first-person shooter Wolfenstein: The New Order has been illegally downloaded more than 100,000 times, according to a report from TorrentFreak.
The number could have been even higher if it weren't for the massive file size for the game--around 43.65GB.
Nintendo is planning a revenue-sharing affiliate program for those using gameplay footage of its games on YouTube. Video bloggers and "Let's Play" creators alike will need permission from the publisher to broadcast their gameplay clips, according to two tweets from the publisher (as translated by Gamasutra).
Valve announced today that its new in-home streaming feature, which allows you to stream games from a "main" computer to any other rig in your home, is now available to all 75 million Steam users. Previously, the feature was only available to some users in beta.
One of the main benefits of Steam in-home streaming is that you can play your PC games on a lower-spec computer because they are not actually running on that rig, only being streamed to it. Video and audio are streamed from your main computer over your network.

A 19-year-old man from Colorado robbed a Wells Fargo Bank last Wednesday, only to be discovered and arrested just hours later after buying a new gaming system at Wal-Mart, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by the Canon City Daily Record.

Variety reports that according to "sources familiar with pact," Google's YouTube has reached a deal to acquire the video game streaming platform Twitch for more than $1 billion.
Twitch's PR Director said on Twitter that "Twitch doesn't comment on rumors." Google hasn't made an official statement yet either, but the report claims that the deal should be announced soon.
According to Variety, Google is preparing for U.S. regulators to challenge the acquisition. Given that YouTube is already the most popular platform for internet videos, the Justice Department could see the acquisition as anticompetitive in the online video market.
For the fourth month running, the PlayStation 4 was the top-selling video game system in the United States, followed by the Xbox One (which sold 115,000 units), the NPD Group said today.
As part of its US sales report for April, the NPD Group reported software sales for both next-gen consoles continue to be promising. As part of Ubisoft's earnings report today for the year ended March 31, the French publisher officially confirmed Far Cry 4, the next entry in the action series. It's not much of a surprise, as Ubisoft told GameSpot last year at E3 2013 that a follow-up to Far Cry 3 was a sure-thing based on the sales of that game.
"The year's performance will be led by five games--Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Just Dance, The Crew, and Watch Dogs," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "Watch Dogs' pre-orders are at record levels and it is perfectly positioned to become the industry's most successful new IP in history."
The Wii U may be struggling at the moment, but it's not the first Nintendo platform to come out of the gate slower than than expected. Speaking with analysts recently about the company's recent poor financial performance, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reminded people that the Game Boy also was a slow-starter before rising fast thanks to the release of a single title.
"The fate of a video game system is often influenced greatly by the introduction of a single title. As many of you probably remember, before the release of the Pokémon game, Game Boy had been showing slow growth, and many people wondered whether it was the end of Game Boy," Iwata said. "But the Pokémon game singlehandedly changed the landscape of the system, which then started to show the strongest sales in the lifecycle of the system."
In a surprise announcement today, Microsoft officially revealed a Kinect-free Xbox One unit. The system goes on sale June 9 for $399 (Ł349 in the UK), putting it directly in line with the rival PlayStation 4. Microsoft will continue to offer the $499 standard Xbox One with Kinect.
"We've heard that you want more choices from Xbox One. You want a wide variety of options in your games and entertainment experiences and you also want options in your hardware selection," Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said. "To be clear, as we introduce this new Xbox One console option, Kinect remains an important part of our vision."

On Wednesday, Sony announced that PlayStation Plus subscribers who downloaded a copy of a special PS Plus version of PlayStation 4 racing game Driveclub could upgrade to the full version for $50--$10 less than retail. Otherwise, all subscribers get a stripped down version of the game for free. But what sounded like a good upgrade deal became problematic when Sony also said that you'd lose access to the full game's content if your PlayStation Plus subscription lapsed. As you'd expect, fans spoke out against this policy.
Sony has now reversed that decision. In a statement posted on the PlayStation Blog, Sony writes: "Our priority for Driveclub is to enable you to play and enjoy everything it has to offer and PlayStation recognises that the prior plan for Driveclub entitlement for the upgrade to the PS Plus edition was not appropriate. As a result, we have adjusted the PlayStation Plus terms for Driveclub. Now, If you intend on downloading Driveclub PlayStation Plus Edition, and upgrading to the full game experience, you will have access to the full game even if your PlayStation Plus subscription runs out."

Sony has the early sales lead over Microsoft in the PlayStation 4 vs. Xbox One "console war," but it's not over yet. New Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, has pledged that Microsoft plans to "win" this console generation, making clear that the company needs to do more to come out on top.
"Definitely in to win," Spencer told a fan on Twitter. "We need to do more, that's 100% of my focus." As Head of Xbox, Spencer--who has already worked at Microsoft for over a quarter century--oversees Xbox and Xbox Live, as well as creative teams at Microsoft Studios.

In a new interview with TorrentFreak, a Square Enix business manager explains that anti-piracy measures like digital rights management (DRM) systems are a necessary part of doing business and are not expected to go away anytime soon.
"The primary benefit [of DRM] to us is the same as with any business: profit," Square Enix senior manager of business and legal affairs Adam Sullivan said. "We have a well-known reputation for being very protective of our IPs, which does deter many would-be pirates. However, effectiveness is notoriously difficult to measure--in short, we rely on the data available to us through our sales team and various vendors, along with consumer feedback."
Virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift must expand beyond visuals and allow for touch-based human-to-human interaction, creator Palmer Luckey said in a new interview from PAX East in Boston, Mass. All of this is in the way of creative a fully immersive experience that makes you feel like you're really in a "virtual reality," Luckey said.
"[Virtual reality], it can't just be a visual thing. If VR remains a visual only thing, then certainly we'll never replace human touch-based interactions," Luckey said in a group interview captured by Maximum PC. "But for many interactions, it could."
